Follow up from Dementia Action Alliance Conference

Dear Dementia Champions,

Thank you so much for attending the first South West Wiltshire Dementia Action Alliance conference on Monday, it was great to see such a response for the first meeting and according to the sign in list we had representatives from 13 of the 38 parishes which is an excellent start!

As I said last night, the next step we are asking you to take is to return to your parishes and ask them whether they would be willing to join the Dementia Action Alliance.  If they are then you will need to commit to three actions (suggestions are listed below) and sign up via this online form - http://www.dementiaaction.org.uk/join_the_alliance/get_involved (please indicate that you would like to join the existing South West Wiltshire alliance).

The actions that you take in your parish will vary depending on your local situation but here is a list of possible suggestions that were discussed at the conference:

  • Better signage in shops.

  • Hold a Dementia Friends session – more information available here.

  • Sign up local community venues/shops/pubs/cafes as Safe Places – more information on the scheme available here.

  • Link with the local walking group to create ‘Dementia Walks.’

  • Create a sensory garden or other area.

  • Day trips/visits.

  • Host a community lunch to raise dementia awareness.

  • Link with Salisbury hospital.

  • Sign up volunteers for the Alzheimer’s Society new initiative, ‘Side by Side’ (more information on the scheme to be released in due course).

  • Changes to buildings to make them more dementia friendly.

  • Make ‘easy-to-use’ guides (e.g. to use the gym).

  • Link with local Churches/Vicars.

  • Run a film night.

  • Link with Dorset.

If you need any further support or information then please do not hesitate to contact me and I will either assist myself or point you in the right direction.

Thank you again for your help with trying to make our local communities more dementia friendly.

Kind regards,

Steve
