Open evening on the River Wylye Mon July 7th 6:30- 8:30pm
Last year you may have noticed people working on the river at Chilhampton. This was part of the STREAM Project’s efforts to restore the river for wildlife such as Atlantic salmon and the rare brook lamprey. The river was in serious need of help, with repeated dredging over the years making it unsuitable for the wildlife that traditionally lives in our local chalk rivers.
Working with the Wilton Estate and Wilton Fishing club, STREAM set about livening up the Wylye by putting back a more natural river channel. The work was finished in November last year and fish immediately moved in to spawn in the rejuvenated reaches.
If you want to know more about the Wylye and its restoration, please join us on the river bank from 6:30pm on July 7th. River experts from the STREAM project and Wilton fishing club will be on hand to show you what lives in the Wylye, why and how the river was restored, and how you can get involved in protecting it.
Meet at Chilhampton Farm Yard, off Warminster Road, Wilton, SP2 0AB. From Wilton: take the A36 (Bath - Bristol Road) towards Warminster. Approximately 1 mile further on, the road starts to go downhill and there is a group of buildings, and a farm yard, on the left hand side. Turn left into the first entrance you see (signed Route 36).
Please note:
1) there is limited parking in the farm yard; please consider car sharing, public transport or walking
2) under 16s must be accompanied by an adult; and
3) bring footwear suitable for wet/uneven ground.
